Discussion about Various - Beatle Originals

Interesting to hear the original versions of songs the Beatles covered. A mixed blessing at times. I feel a hell of a lot more comfortable with a girl group, the Shirelles doing 'Boys' (and I think Big Mama Thornton doing 'Hound Dog' makes a hell of a lot more sense than Elvis). One of my least favorite Beatle songs is their cover of 'Mr. Moonlight'. The original is no better. I know Lennon gives an impassioned vocal, but this song was hopelessly dated when it came out. Ditto the Donays' 'Devil in His Heart'. Seems very square, especially for the Fab Four.On the plus side, the Beatles' versions of 'Honey Don't', 'Matchbox', 'Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby' and 'Words of Love' are quite similar to the classic originals. The Beatles knew better than to change Buddy Holly or Carl Perkins.Nothing against the great Little Richard, but I do get a bigger kick out of the Beatles' version of 'Kansas City / Hey Hey Hey'. The spotlight is on that incredible vocal by Paul, almost as good as his classic remake of Little Richard's 'Long Tall Sally' on 'The Beatles' Second Album'.Larry Williams is fine on the originals. I actually prefer his 'Dizzy, Miss Lizzy' to John's manic take, but Lennon truly steals 'Slow Down' from Williams. It's arguably the best old rock and roll song the Beatles ever did. Lennon's vocal is genius. I'm less pleased with John's version of 'Bad Boy'...the rage seems forced there.I find 'Anna' a minor song, don't like either Alexander's or the Beatles' version. And meaning no disrespect to Buck Owens, 'Act Naturally' was the perfect vehicle for Ringo. It's really still a funny song after all these years.
