When this album first came early in 2014, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Pharrell had a fantastic 2013, in which he came back in the public eye seemingly out of nowhere, mainly due to his contributions on Daft Punk's Random Access Memories and in Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines, which was arguably the biggest hit song of 2013. Pharrell ended happy with the release of 'Happy' in November of the same year, off of the 'Despicable Me 2' soundtrack, in which he also contributed in. So when I first heard that this album was coming out in February-March 2014, I was intrigued, and I honestly didn't know what to expect from this solo effort. On release day, I sat down, and played the first track 'Marilyn Monroe', and I heard the first orchestral strings come alive. In short- it's a great pop/motown-RnB-ish album. Not all of the songs on the album are immediate bangers- at first, I disliked 'Hunter', 'Come Get It Bae' and 'It Girl', in part of the lyrics and Pharrell's falsetto. These ones are growers, and the more you listen to them the more you understand how they work, and how this album works in general.This is not an album that is set out to change the game- rather the opposite: it proves that Pharrell can make some pretty great jams, as seen in 'Brand New' or 'Gush'. It proves that Pharrell has found for himself a sound that works for him as a solo artist- and that sound is the RnB/disco flavor that he discovered in himself back in 2013, but this time with more of an uplifting Motown vibe to it (Happy, Know Who You Are, Brand New). Many of the tracks are elevated with the use of a full orchestra, in which most of the parts have been arranged by Hans Zimmer, and gives some of these tracks some interesting touches (Marilyn Monroe, Gust of Wind). In general, it's just some pretty decent rnb, with funk/disco/motown vibe happening on all of the tracks, which is not a bad thing, after all. It's probably best if you go into this album with no prejudice, but you guys already know that.
